The ultimate incarnation of the legendary Ferrari V12 front range, the 365 GTB / 4 was launched at the 1968 Paris Motor Show and quickly earned the nickname ”Daytona” in homage to the Ferrari 330 P4’s triple victory on the circuit of the same name in 1967. It was Leonardo Fioravanti from Pininfarina who was responsible for its shark-nose styling. The Daytona cases were manufactured by carrozzeria Scaglietti.
When launched, the Daytona was the most powerful two-seater GT and the fastest production car in the world; it exceeded 270 km/h and was sure to remain a leading supercar for the future. The deliveries of the convertible version only began in 1971. In total, 1.300 Berlinetta and just 123 Spiders were produced until the end of manufacturing in 1973.
The very low number of spiders produced left many potential customers frustrated, which inevitably led to the transformation of a number of coupes.
The proposed specimen has been transformed into a spider by renowned specialist in the field, Richard Straman Coachworks of Costa Mesa, California, USA.
Chassis number 13865 was initially invoiced by Ferrari to its dealer in Verona (IT) and left the factory in Bianco Polo color, with Connolly Nero leather interior. This Daytona then went to the US where it was from 1987 to 2007 the property of William Effinger, from Atlanta, Georgia.
Its transformation into a spider took place in 1989/1990, at the same time that the headlamps abandoned Plexiglas and became retractable. The car was then repainted in red, re-trimmed in black and received Borrani wire wheels. As long as it was owned by Effinger, the car has been maintained by a Ferrari dealer, FAF Motorcars in Georgia.
In January 2008, the car was sold to a German, Helmut Gassman, and was repainted the same year in its current configuration: Grigio Ferro exterior with a beige leather interior featuring black inserts on the seats.
The next owner resided in the UK and bought the Daytona in November 2016. While in the UK, the car was regularly serviced by Foskers.
Its numbers match, it is in very good condition, ready to delight its user with excellent paintwork and interior. The soft top mounts well (its components conform to the original plans) and its frame works well. The current owner is a Belgian car collector. He acquired the car in 2021 and made quite a long list of works on the car to bring it to excellent condition. The vehicle is registered as oldtimer in Belgium. Among its documents is a copy of its old US and UK papers.
Almost undistinguishable from a real factory spider, the car here presented for sale represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a beautiful, well-maintained Daytona convertible, for much less than an original spider.
